Alphabet Grid: Phonics

materials: sidewalk chalk or masking tape

ABC GRID
Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondance & Letter Recognition
1. Jump on letter name, say the sound
2. Teacher calls out a letter sound, student jumps on the letter that represents the sound
3. Hold up an object, have the student locate and jump on the beginning, middle or end sound. Ex: Beginning sound of the word ball. Student jumps on the letter /b/

Segment & Blend the Word
After children find beginning, middle and end sounds of the word, have them segment it
and blend the word on a separate. Ex: grid /b/ /a/ /ll/ = ball
(Phoneme segmentation. The ability to identify separate phonemes in a spoken word.)

SPELL
Have child choose an object and spell the word phonetically, jumping to each letter on the alphabet grid. Child shouts out letters Ex: dog: child jumps on D-O-G

Alphabet Inference

thinking boy via parenting on track
Morning writing prompt: See if students can use their inference skills to figure out the alphabet puzzle from Cool Math 4 Kids! What separates the letters above the red line from the letters below it? Kids must observe the letters and compare their similarities and differences. Have them write what they think the solution is in their journal. If you're still stumped, visit Cool Math 4 Kids for the answer!

Spelling in Braille

Practice your spelling words in braille from the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry! You will need dried beans (or round cereal), glue, construction paper, and a braille chart (for each student). Write the spelling words on pieces of scrap paper and toss them into a paper lunch bag. Have each child choose one word from the bag. Tell them to keep their word a secret! Students write their word in beans, using a braille chart, by pasting them onto a piece of construction paper. Then, they trade their bean braille with a friend and try to figure out their friend's word. Remind them to keep their eyes closed and try to figure out each letter, rather than the whole word at once. They use their braille chart to help them.

Polygon Alphabet

Integrate typography into a geometry lesson! How many letters can you find that reveal a hidden polygon if you add 1, 2, 3, or 4 line segments to the letter? Print off an alphabet sheet and have students hunt for polygons! Then, have them record how many letters they found with hidden polygons for each number of line segments. Example: 1 line segment: 4 letters (A, L, P, V)

ABC Measuring Spree!

Go on an ABC measuring spree around the classroom or your home with a ruler (or a tape measurer) and a yard stick. Split kids up into groups, and have each group in charge of certain letters. Can you find something for each letter of the alphabet?! Measure things in different increments: centimeters, inches, yards, feet. Practice making conversions with older kids. Write down your findings and compare! When looking for letters, think about brand names, classmates' names, book titles, etc. for hard to find letters.

Other measuring games you could play include: shape, color, book, furniture, or lunch - get creative! Kids love scavenger hunts. A measuring challenge makes measuring fun!
